Ladies, gentleman and soldiers alike, I am proud to report that our first annual 5k, held August 14, was a total success! Here are the details:
The race started at 8 a.m. on what would end up being an absolutely perfect morning, both in weather and energy. The sun was coming over the mountains while the Amercian flags were being placed along the course by the local Boy Scouts. Volunteers were in place and the racers began arriving to pick up their race packets and bibs at 7 a.m. The flood of same-day registrants was so amazing that we ran out of t-shirts.
A final tally revealed 146 racers and over $3200 raised – not bad for a first “run” if I do say so. Several more participants and volunteers donated enough money for the cost of five more care packages to be sent to Brooke Army Medical Center on Veterans Day, which falls on November 11 this year.
First and second place went to Jose and Rodrigo Ortiz, both coming in at 19 minutes (and maybe a fraction of a second after). Good work fellas!
Every participant received a raffle ticket in their race bag and was entered to win one of the many prizes donated by local residents, businesses and sponsors.
Thank you to our sponsors, donors and participants: This event came together thanks to your donations and support.
